The 226 pictures, most of which are published here for the first time, have been selected from a unique collection of over 1000 photographs taken by the Finnish anthropologist Hilma Granqvist. The photographs were taken during a period of three years in the 1920s while Dr Granqvist was conducting research in the little Muslim village of Artas near Bethlehem. Her pictures provide an unusually intimate portrait of a Palestinian village at one moment in history. The wide range of subjects covered by the photographs together with Karen Seger's informative text and captions, based on Dr. Granqvist's books and manuscripts, make this album a valuable record of a neglected aspect of Palestinian culture. -- Contents: Introduction; Map of Palestine; 1 Setting [Biblical Traditions; Early History of Artas (Crusades; Period of the Arab Sultans; Ottoman Rule); Artas in the 1920s; Palestine in the 1920s] 2 Inhabitants [Artas Men and Women; Tacamre; Christians; Visitors and Itinerants; Sitt Louisa] 3 Pregnancy, Birth and Childhood [Conception; Pregnancy (Pregnancy Cravings; Dangers During Pregnancy); Childbirth (Preparation for Childbirth; Labour; Delivery; Care of the Newborn Child; Care of the Mother; Announcement of the Birth; Naming the Child); The First Forty Days; Nursing; Child Mortality and Illness; Infancy; Childhood (Children's Dress; Play and Work; Education; Training); Change of Status] 4 Circumcision [Preparations for Circumcision (Evenings of Joy; Procession); Circumcision Ceremony (Fear and Recovery; The Feast); The Uncircumcised; Religious Quality] 5 Marriage ['Blessed be the Bridegroom'; Wedding Seasons; Choosing a Bride (Child Marriage; 'Gift from the Pit'); Betrothal Ceremonies (The Hand of the Bride; Betrothal Feast; Bride-Price; Marriage Contract); Wedding Preparations (Days of Joy; Evening of Henna); Wedding Day (Bridal Procession; Dressing the Bride; Return Procession; Entering the House; Wedding Feast; Unveiling the Bride); The Morning After The Wedding; The Wedding Week; Married Life; Estrangement; Multiple Wives; Divorce; Widowhood] 6 Division of Labour [Men's Work; Women's Work; Shared Tasks] 7 Islam, and Folk Traditions [Ramadan; The Little Feast; The Great Feast; Thursday of the Dead; Pilgrimage to Nebi Musa; Evil Influences (Jinn; Qarine; 'Unclean Women'; Evil Eye); Supernatural Protection (Saints and Holy Vows; Appeals to Saints; Sacrifices)] 8 Death and Burial [Dying; Time and Place of Death; Last Wishes; Final Actions; Lamenting the Dead; Burial Preparations (The Tomb; The Shroud; Grave Goods; Bride of the Grave; Preparation of the Body); Burial Ceremonies and Rituals (Dhikr Ceremony; Angels of Death; Judgment of the Dead; Atonement for 'Religious Debts'; Farewells); Procession to the Cemetery; Interment (Request from the Grave; In the Tomb; Closing the Grave; Condolences); Post-Burial Rituals (Burial Feasts; Condolence Visits; Thursdays of the Dead; Supper for the Dead); Mourning]; Bibliography.
