A 'gowk storm' is an untimely fall of snow in early Spring - a fitting symbol for the anguished story that unfolds in this novel. Like Chekov's famous play, and even more like the real-life Brontės whose story she told in another book, Morrison tells the story of three girls who were born to a minister and his wife in a remote Highland manse, nearly a hundred years ago. It is narrated by the youngest sister, Lisbet, who describes the love affairs of her older sisters, Julia and Emmy, each of whom falls in love with a man deemed an unacceptable match by their patriarchal, rigid and prejudiced society. These societal strictures are set against approaching womanhood, the growing awareness of a life beyond the safety of home, and the wild beauty of the surrounding countryside.

From the Back Cover:

A 'gowk storm' is an untimely fall of snow in early Spring - a fitting symbol for the anguished story that unfolds. The rigid and patriarchal structure of those times is set against approaching womanhood and its growing awareness of life beyond the safety of home and the wild beauty of the surrounding countryside.

About the Author:

Nancy Brysson Morrison was born in Glasgow. A very private person who never married, she lived in this city for most of her life, but also London and Edinburgh. Her work was very much admired in America, and indeed her late novel Thea (1962) was first published in New York. An interest in biography resulted in books on a variety of historical and literary figures; others were published on religious subjects. She also wrote five other novels, set partly in Glasgow, partly in the Highlands.

Book Description Canongate Books Ltd, United Kingdom, 2001. Paperback. Condition: New. Main. Language: English . Brand New Book. Oddballs, tinks, heidbangers, saints, keelies, nutters, philosophers and freaks. These apparently marginal lives are not only interesting in their own right but often tell us more about the mores of a country or a time than the lives of its better known citizens (and some of them are included here too). Here, the Japanese poet Basho, the baseball star Babe Ruth and the singer Billie Holiday rub shoulders with Ganesh, Johnny Faa, the Gypsy Laddie and Eliza Donnithorne (true-life model for Dickens? Miss Havisham). Angus Calder has created an original, ex-centric and richly entertaining compendium of brief but essential lives. Seller Inventory # ABS9780862412227
