Around the Sacred Sea is the fascinating account of a remarkable journey made around Russia's Lake Baikal -- on horseback. This lake is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world and is a natural phenomenon of dizzying proportion. This beautifully written narrative is complemented by photographs of outstanding quality, making Around the Sacred Sea both a riveting read and a visual feast.

In 1993, three recent Harvard graduates, well armed with letters of introduction and privileged contacts, both political and scientific, rode horses north from Mongolia to Siberia and around Lake Baikal, the world's deepest lake with the greatest volume of fresh water on earth. It was a four-month journey of self-imposed physical challenges, in part an endeavor to report on the environmental damage being accelerated by the break-up of the Soviet Union and in part a youthful lark liberally oiled by alcohol consumption with the local characters encountered along the way. (It's astonishing how much vodka was consumed on this trip!) While the book is attractive and well produced, its sketchmap fails to trace the route taken, and the environmental information is now seven years out of date. But, overall, Bull (Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure) has written a spirited account of a most interesting and little-known part of the world that will fill a gap in public library collections.DHarold M. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photographs by John Boit and Kerim Yalman (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First Published In The UK In 1999' ). Signed and inscribed by the author, Bartle Bull, on the half-title page. This is a rare signature. I found only two other copies of the book that he signed. One is selling for $250.00, the other for $350.00. I've priced mine, despite its excellent condition, at half the latter price. Interestingly, Mr. Bull signed his name 'Big Bartle'. I thought that might indicate that the signer was actually his father who has the same name. However, I was able to find another of the author's signatures and it matches to a tee the 'Bartle' part of the signature in this book. Perhaps a clue to the 'Big' can be found in the name of the horse seen on the front cover ('Big Rizhka'). And he seems to have named this real horse after a fictional horse from one of his novels. I purchased this book from the library of John J. McCloy, the former Assistant Secretary of War and High Commissioner of Postwar Germany. I'm guessing that McCloy was friendly with Big Bartle's father (a lawyer from Harvard like McCloy) and grandfather who was a Conservative party politician born around the same time as McCloy. This book was inscribed to John J. McCloy's son and daughter-in-law (McCloy died several years before the book was published). The inscription reads: 'October 2005, For John + Laura-- Who appreciate the spirit of adventure-- As ever-- Big Bartle.' Happily, they took very good care of the book. The covers are very clean. The gilt on the spine is very bright. There's just a tiny bit of rubbing at the corners and spine ends. The edges are in very good shape. The page edges are perfectly clean. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The inside covers and end papers, presenting the same map in white and blue, are very clean and free of wear. I scrolled through the pages several times without finding any soiling. They do have the expected toning at the margins that you often see on glossy paper. There are no markings anywhere in the book. I'm not seeing any creasing at all. There are no attachments. And the signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. The dust jacket is in very good condition as well. It is very clean. It has one small tear off the bottom edge of the rear cover just adjacent to the spine. It also has one thin crease off the top edge of the spine and just adjacent to it. The flaps are in very good condition, very clean. The rear flap has a few tiny nicks, quite minor. The jacket is not priced or clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'At the age of 23, Bartle Bull led the first expedition ever to circumnavigate Lake Baikal. Whilst exploring the ecology and natural wonders of this astonishing area, Bartle and his team were also mapping the devastating impact of man. Around the Sacred Sea is the fascinating account of a remarkable journey made around Russia's Lake Baikal -- on horseback. This lake is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world and is a natural phenomenon of dizzying proportion. This beautifully written and at times highly amusing narrative is complemented by photographs of outstanding quality, making Around the Sacred Sea both a riveting read and a visual feast. It's the first book fully to explore one of the earth's greatest wonders.'. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 003182
