About the Author:

Aubrey Flegg was born in Dublin. His early childhood was spent in County Sligo, Ireland. He went to school in Dublin and later in England. After a spell with a mountain rescue team in Scotland, he returned to Ireland to study geology at Trinity College. He then did geological research in Kenya, before joining the Geological Survey of Ireland in 1968. Aubrey recently took early retirement in order to concentrate on writing. His first book, Katie's War, is about the civil war period in Ireland; it was published in 1997. Katie's War has recently won the Peter Pan Award 2000 -- an award created by IBBY Sweden for a children's book, translated into Swedish, which gives information on another culture. Wings Over Delft, the first book in the Louise trilogy, won the Bisto Book of the Year overall award in 2004.

From Booklist:

Gr. 5-8. Katie's father returned from the Great War physically and emotionally damaged, but all that is past. He's now even talking about reopening the quarry. But there is new trouble brewing in Ireland. An unpopular treaty has caused discord. Katie's father wants nothing to do with war anymore, but her older brother, Seamus, is against the treaty, and he joins a growing group of Irish rebels who are willing to fight to sever all ties with England. When Katie discovers that Seamus has hidden a huge supply of guns and ammunition in the abandoned quarry, she vows to destroy it before their father finds out, knowing the discovery could send him spiraling back into madness. In addition to many exciting scenes, the plot offers humor and a little romance. Flegg has also created some sharply drawn characters, especially high-spirited Katie and her Welsh cohort, Dafydd. This is effective historical fiction, which introduces children to an important piece of war-torn Ireland's complicated past. Lauren Peterson
