Paperback. Condition: Gut. VIII, 187 p.: Maps. Bleistiftanmerkung auf Schmutztitel, sonst ein sehr gutes Exemplar / pencil annotation on half title, otherwise a very good copy. - First published in 1969 in the Bell Alpha Classics Series, this serviceable edition presents a considerable selection of Catullus' oeuvre in a variety of metres and genres. It was originally intended to introduce the poet to students in the final years of school but can with equal success be used in the first year of an undergraduate course. The poems are arranged thematically: short poems first and then selected longer poems, including poem 64 in full. The basic introduction provides factual information which the student needs before embarking on the poems. The notes assist with language and content; there is a select vocabulary and a useful appendix on metres. / CONTENTS INTRODUCTION THE POEMS Part OneShorter Poems I Friends and Foes (?) THERE is no Latin author more suitable for Sixth Form study than Catullus. The variety of his subject-matter, the range of his emotions, the originality of his ideas, and the superb quality of his verse combine to make the reading of his poems a delight to both teacher and taught. It is of course impossible to tackle the whole of his writings and a selection must be made. The present volume includes almost every poem that can be read and explained without embarrassment, and excisions have been kept to a mini-mum. As the order in which the poems appear in the manuscripts is notoriously unsatisfactory, those selected have been rearranged in groups according to their subject-matter, and within those groups an attempt has been made to place them in an intelligible order. The longer poems have been grouped together at the end. If time is too short for the whole selection to be read, one or more of these longer poems can be omitted, for example no. 61, which the poet left unrevised, no. 64, which is not an original poem but a translation, and no. 66, which is by far the longest; or no. 66 can be shortened by taking the picture out of its frame, in other words, by reading only lines 47-267. The conventional numbering of the poems is given in Roman numerals at the end of each poem. - From the Preface. Seller Inventory # 202857
