During World War I, many working class women found themselves employed outside the home for the first time, the number of women working in trades already associated with a female work force increased, traditionally male-dominated industries recruited women to fill the shortfall, and the concentration of women employed in government munitions factories grew. Gareth R. Griffiths is a historian who has written on a wide range of historical subjects as well as advising on many museum and heritage projects in the UK, Europe, and the Middle East. He is an ex-director of the Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol. He is presently working on a biography of the Northern poet and spy, Basil Bunting.
