Grade 4-6 An attractive book with lots of color photographs and diagrams plus a text which is clear, concise and covers the subject nicely. Young readers are given a look behind the scenes at a typical day in the life of a ballet company, beginning with the dancers' first class and ending with the evening performance. Children are also shown what goes on in such places as the wardrobe departments, the scenery departments and other seldom-seen areas. Other books on ballet such as Dancer (Scribners, 1980; o.p.) by Suzanne Merry deal with dancers' performance preparations. However, this book takes the unusual slant of showing the preparations by an entire company from cleaning staff to sound crew. A basic fact sheet on the Royal Ballet is given. A good companion to Life at the Royal Ballet School (Methuen, 1979) by Camilla Jessel, which details the training undergone by Royal Ballet dancers.Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, Ga.
