Most music histories published in Britain during the nineteenth century amounted to little more than severely compressed and simplified versions of Burney's and Hawkins's mammoth treatises. Stafford's Historywas an exception to the rule. The emphasis placed there on both ancient and contemporary exotic music makes it a pioneer document in the literature of ethnomusicology. The text has been enlarged by three per cent for ease in reading.
