Martin Zirngibl was born in 1962 in Zofingen, Switzerland. He received a diploma in theoretical physics in 1987 and a PhD in applied physics in 1990, both from the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL). In 1990, he joined Bell Laboratories where he has been working on erbium doped fiber amplifiers, on integrated optical devices on InP and on various WDM network architectures.
