The breadth of Arabic literature produced by Arab writers from pre-Islamic times to the contemporary period reveals a world of thought and feeling largely unseen and unheard in the English-speaking world. In this wide-ranging and unique anthology, works by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim authors show the genius of Arab civilization through the prism of literature.

Through odes (or Mu’allaqat); selections from the Qur’an; samples of Hadith and the poetry of rivalry, love, adventure, and mystic transcendence; and prose conveying scientific innovation, philosophical inquiry, theological disputation, and historical analysis, this extraordinary collection provides an authoritative overview of Arabic literature.

About the Author:

Suheil Bushrui: Suheil Bushrui is a distinguished author, poet, critic and translator, particularly revered as an authority on the works of W.B. Yeats, whose work he translated into Arabic, and Kahlil Gibran. He is a Senior Research Scholar at the Center for International Development and Conflict Management, University of Maryland. Previous books include 'The Spiritual Heritage of the Human Race: An Introduction to the World’s Religions' and 'The Wisdom of the Arabs'.
James M. Malarkey: James M. Malarkey, a specialist in the Middle East and North Africa, is the Chair of Humanities and General Education at Antioch University Midwest.

From Booklist:

This work aims to provide representative literature from pre-Islamic to the modern era, covering eastern Arabia, North Africa, and Andalusia. However, it falls a bit short of the goal—general encyclopedia entries on Arabic literature reference works, authors, and even genres that are not mentioned here. Each section focuses on a specific time period, and within each section, samples of various authors’ works are presented in English translation. The translations themselves are previously published and (per the preface) the best available. Unfortunately, some of the translations are arcane, and some entries are misclassified. This volume may be better suited as a specific reference for scholars rather than for general readers. --Muhammed Hassanali

Book Description SAQI BOOKS, United Kingdom, 2013. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. The Literary Heritage of the Arabs samples some of the finest literature produced by Arab writers from pre-Islamic times to the Abbasid Dynasty. The selection of poetry and prose spans many genres and styles, conveying the full range of Arab experiences and perspectives - from the tragic to the comic, the wistful to the mystical, and the courtly to the lowly. This volume includes Arabian odes (or Mu'allaqat), the pre-eminent poetic form in pre-Islamic tribal society; selections from the Holy Qur'an, which revolutionized Arab spiritual and poetic sensibility and contributed a literary exemplar and inspiration that has endured to this day; samples of Hadith that testify to the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad; and examples of poetry produced during the Umayyad dynasty. The anthology concludes with a cornucopia of poetry and prose that flourished during the Abbasid period - the fruit of vibrant cross-cultural interaction and influence - such as the poetry of rivalry, love, adventure and mystic transcendence, as well as prose conveying scientific innovation, philosophical inquiry, theological disputation and historical analysis.
