Taken from Chapter 8: The shoemaker The early settlers needed sturdy shoes and boots. They had to walk great distances. Shoes were expensive. Sometimes a husband and wife shared one pair of shoes. Some people went barefoot during the hot weather in order to keep their shoes from wearing out. Some shoemakers traveled from house to house. A shoemaker stayed with one family until all the family members had shoes made or mended. It took one day for a shoemaker to make a pair of shoes. Sometimes, the shoemaker lived with a large family for several weeks!
