Taken from Chapter 9: Action books In the early 1800s, the only books children read were their schoolbooks and the family Bible. The first fun-to-read books were created in the 1850s. They had colorful pictures and lively stories. Action books had parts that moved! Pulling a ribbon could make a bird "fly" across the page or make a musician seem to strum a banjo. Some books came with cutout figures that fit into slots on the page. Using the figures and backgrounds, the reader could create his or her own picture and story.
