About the Author:
Dubbed the 'Mr. Chips' of Chicago's Loyola University, the late James J. Mertz, S.J. served there as Professor, then Professor Emeritus, of Classics in a career spanning nearly 6 decades. As versatile as the Jesuit poets whose work he studied and collected, Mertz taught philosophy, geography, natural sciences, Latin and German. Mertz initiated Loyola University's excellent collection of Jesuit poetry in 1922 when he arrived there literally atop a truckload of books.

John P. Murphy, S.J. is Associate Professor of Classics at Loyola University of Chicago and the former Secretary to the Superior General of the Jesuit Order in Rome.

Jozef IJsewijn, author of Companion to Neo-Latin Studies, Part I: History and Diffusion of Latin Literature, is a prominent Neo-Latin scholar at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and has been a consultant on numerous Neo-Latin texts.

Language Notes:
Text: English, Latin (translation)
