Melvin Bacon and Dan Blegen feel uniquely qualified to tell the Bent's Fort story, having participated in the American West Institute sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. As costumed interpreters at the Historic Site, they lived and breathed the life of 1846, even sleeping under the stars on buffalo robes.
Melvin Bacon chairs the social studies department at Brighton High School in Brighton, Colorado, where he also teaches U.S. history, Western civilization, and the
history of the American West. He is an accomplished photographer as well as a published author of fiction and poetry. In 1990 the Colorado Council for the Social Studies presented him with the Outstanding Social Studies Educator Award; in 1992 he was selected Outstanding American History Teacher by the Colorado Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; and in 1993 he was named Outstanding American History Teacher by the Colorado Daughters of Colonial Wars. He has listings in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in the 1996 and 2000 editions.
Dan Blegen has taught English, journalism, speech, and drama at the junior high, high school, and community college levels for close to thirty years. He is a published poet, and three of his plays have been produced. He has also written articles for a variety of national magazines, including drama reviews for Theater Week and Dramatics. In addition, his journalistic credits in Colorado include the Boulder Daily Camera, the Longmont Daily Times-Call, and the Brighton Standard-Blade. In 2001 he was chosen to attend a two-week journalism institute sponsored by the American Association of Newspaper Editors at the University of Texas. He teaches American literature, creative writing, and journalism at Brighton High School.Review:
