Text / Sprache: Englisch , Marooned : The Wreck of the Vergulde Draeck and the Abandonment and Escape from the Southland of Abraham Leeman in 1658 , Bibliogr. p. 212. Index. This new facsimile edition of James Henderson's classic work MAROONED (first published in 1982) was produced in 2002 to celebrate the opening of the new WA Maritime Museum building in Fremantle. Marooned is a story of the sea, rousing and true, from early Australian history. It is a story born of the exploration of the Southland (as Australia was called) by ships ploughing their long and awesome route to the Dutch East India Company's headquarters at Batavia. This is also an account of the shipwreck of some of these voyagers, of the loss of brave men and vital cargo. One of the ships, the Vergulde Draeck, foundered in 1656, leaving sixty-eight survivors stranded on the Western Australian coast. In 1658 two ships were sent to attempt a rescue, and on board one, the Waeckende Boey, was the officer-navigator Abraham Leeman van Santwits. This book, above all, is a chronicle of the intrepid Leeman, one of the more astonishing if till now unsung heroes of the ocean. Translations of Leeman's diary and other documents reveal his abandonment, with thirteen men,by their skipper on an island off Western Australia. Leeman's desperate journey to Java - in an overloaded open boat, battling around reefs and through gales, with towering swells breaking over the gunwales and dying sailors pleading for water - was an odyssey of leadership and courage. James Henderson has sailed in Leeman's wake. He describes the treacherous coast Leeman encountered and confirms the location of those grim but inspiring Seventeenth Century events. The author possesses the knack of placing the harrowing struggles and exciting achievements of long ago in easy-to-read modern focus. 19803A ISBN 0867780185 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 530.
