Book Description Hale & Iremonger, Sydney, 1987. Paper Back. Condition: Very Good. 264 pages. The "Pig Iron" dispute on the Port Kembla waterfront in the thirties. The arrival in Port Kembla Harbour in November 1938 of a grimy British tramp, the Dalfram, to load pig-iron for Japan coincided with Japan's barbarous war on China and preparation for a southward thrust. At the time, Rupert Lockwood was senior Canberra press galleryman for the Melbourne Herald. War on the Waterfront recalls a neglected chapter in Australian history when 180 men in sweaty work singlets and hob-nailed boots sacrificed pay packets in favour of conscience rather than become unwilling providers of munitions metal to Japan. These books were purchased new and have been in storage for decades. However, the edges of the book and inside covers are somewhat tanned. Several copies are available. 264 pages. Size: Size E: 8"-9" Tall (203-228mm). Seller Inventory # 63606
