Robert J. Meurn, Master Mariner and Captain, U.S. Naval Reserve (Ret), received his Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point NY, and his Master of Arts in Higher Education from George Washington University. He taught at Texas Maritime Academy, was Commandant of Cadets and Executive Officer of the TS Texas Clipper, and was selected as Teacher of the Year in 1978. In 1979, he began his tenure as associate professor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. In 1981, he devised and implemented the first watchstanding course in the United States for cadets utilizing the CAORF simulator. Capt. Meurn was honored by receiving the Dept. of Transportation’s Bronze Medal Award, and the first ever recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal for his contributions to safety in marine transportation. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Marine Transportation at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
