Maps trace the development of the United States, showing environmental, political, social, and economic change

The National Geographic Society (NGS) has marked its centennial not only by giving the nation a lavishly informative historical atlas (there are more than 100 historical maps, as well as 380 other maps), but by presenting 35,000 copies to the libraries of secondary schools across the country. More than the television generation will find the atlas diverting and instructive; all Americans, including specialists of every kind, will be caught and taught by it. Thematic sections (e.g., the land and its people) are presented against a chronology from 1400 to the present. This counterpoint offers a staggering range of visual ways of conceiving of our past. The oldest maps share pages with innovative demographic charts--all surrounded by some 450 photographs and prints which bring the past vividly to life in full NGS color.

From Europe they came, colonists bearing Old World notions of a recent divine intervention, a single catastrophic flood. They found much to support their views in this mysterious new land: placid streams entrenched in deep canyons, fossil fish entombed atop mountain crests. Later generations would look to the rock and question the assumptions of their ancestors. Gaps riddled the complex record they have unraveled.
