This book was an act of love for me: love of life, love of my soon-to-be wife, love of the simplicity of bicycle travel, and love of a people and their placeNew Zealand. If you never want to go there, dont read itit will probably change your mind!)
Ive included the books first chapter for your review and, hopefully, your enjoyment! If you are thinking of visiting New Zealand, whether by bike or otherwise, I think TWO WHEELS will inspire you.
I am in the process of writing a second book, this one dealing with an 810 mile hike Kate and I took down Montanas Continental Divide. The story intertwines our seven year struggle with Kates cervical cancer. Our fondest hope is that the story will inspire others to the realization that cancer can be overcome and that life beyond cancer can be highly rewarding. In 2000, Kate and I will pass through her five year milestone of being once again healthy. We greatly appreciate each and every day of being alive. From the Inside Flap:
Scott Bischke and Katie Gibson cut loose from their everyday routine and headed Down Under to explore and experience New Zealand from the seat of a bicycle. Their goal was simple: to immerse themselves in a land and its people, to become a part of New Zealand, not just pass through it.
During the course of their 8,000 kilometer odyssey, Scott and Katie sampled much of New Zealands (and a bit of Australias) bounty. Their freewheeling travels took them from tramping, canoeing, and fly fishing for monster trout to caving, scuba diving, and picking kiwifruit as transient laborers. And, of course, there were the Kiwis, with their rich sense of humor and indomitable spirit, always ready with a happy Gidday and a helping hand for a couple of Yank travelers.
Theirs was a journey of discovery, both as individuals and as a couple. They shared the joys of exploration and new friendships, as well as the frustrations that come with biking over challenging terrain and living in a two-person tent. TWO WHEELS AROUND NEW ZEALAND is a lighthearted adventure story; but above all it is a celebration of the people, landscape, and lifestyle of New Zealand.
