When Nick Bottom, a weaver and an actor in amateur theatricals, is selected by Theseus to serve as the king's messenger, he encounters a variety of unexpected adventures

"Fairies she'd seen with her own wondering eyes, but a discoursing donkey demanded another order of credulity," states a character in this modern fairy tale. Such credulity will come easily to readers caught up in this seriocomic view of law-and-order society. Set in the Athens of legendary Theseus and his captive woman, Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, this fanciful romp features hapless weaver Nick Bottom and his donkey Dewdrop. Watson, commissioned by Oberon, king of the fairies, to retell his story with embellishments unthought of by Shakespeare, tells the often ludicrous farrago of lovers' escapades within an enchanted forest, while, outside, bloody Athenian justice goes on apace. The reader who follows the comedy of errors will have as much arcane fun as the author, a professor in England, evidently did.

Whilom (which means "once upon a time" in Middle English) is a self-consciously literary retelling of the story of Theseus and his return to Athens after the conquest of the Amazons. This modern-day version of A Midsummer Night's Dream is replete with familiar characters, including Oberon, King of the Fairies; various pairs of lovers; and a cast of common folks, including Nick Bottom, noble innocent, who acts as the foil and counterpoint to the hero Theseus. By turns clever, bawdy, and occasionally insightful, Watson's explores the themes of order, romance, and chivalry in the context of a comedy of errors. After a slow start, Whilom remains a story easy to put down.
