This anthropological study of native groups in the Coastal Salish region began in 1935 as a complement to the work of Dr. S. Klimek who was studying the material cultures of the region. The author extended the inquiry in the following years through extensive interviews of twelve representative ethnic groups. Reports in this volume include aspects of the environment, food, occupations, and life stages for each group.
While some of the cultures exhibit extensive influence from western settlers, the oral history collected from senior informants representing each tribe provide fascinating insights into pre-contact lifestyles and customs.
