The British were instrumental in stirring up the Cherokees, who occupied land now comprising Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties. A major campaign against the Indians was fought by upper South Carolinians, Georgians, western North Carolinians, and Tennesseans within the framework of the Revolution. These and many other facts of the early history of the South Carolina Upcountry are detailed in this classic work on the Colonial period and Revolutionary War campaigns in the Upcountry. The book covers the Upper South Carolina governmental organization at the beginning of the Revolution and goes on to detail the battles in the region. Chapters are devoted to the battles of Cowpens, Kings Mountain, and the Star Fort at Ninety Six. Smaller battles covered include Cedar Springs, Fort Prince, Musgrove's Mill, Earle's Ford, Canebrakes, Eutaw Springs, Fishing Creek, Gowen's Fort, and Round Mountain. Considerable genealogical information is found in the volume, particularly of the leaders in these battles as well as the early settlers of the area.
