From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-6-A thorough survey of the animals' physical characteristics and behavior in the wild is presented in a lively, flowing text, and complemented by clear full-color photographs, range maps, and diagrams. A chapter on the elephants' impact on the environment emphasizes the importance of a balanced habitat and the destruction that can occur when their living areas are limited. The timely topic of poaching is addressed. The text is weighted with more information about the African elephant, but comparisons with the Asian species are included. An index, table of contents, and open format with good-sized type will appeal to both report writers and general readers. Dorothy Patent's African Elephants (Holiday, 1991) and Cynthia Overbeck's Elephants (Lerner, 1981) contain some of the same information, but this attractive, well-organized volume is a solid nonfiction purchase.

From Booklist:

Gr. 3-6. This new volume in the Sierra Club Wildlife Library series comprises seven well-written chapters that cover all aspects of elephants--from their anatomy to their search for food to the environment in which they live. The text uses black-and-white and color drawings as well as large, clear photographs to capture elephants involved in their daily activities. Boxed insets highlight interesting information--the differences between African and Asian elephants, the means of elephant communication, and elephant distribution, for example--and special terms defined in the text are italicized. A glossary would have been helpful, but this is still a useful resource for the student needing material for an animal report. Christie Sylvester
