About the Author

Martha Smock was editor of Daily Word for 33 years. In that time, she helped and comforted millions of people through her prolific writing and also through her work in the Silent Unity Prayer Ministry. Smock was part of Unity from her birth in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1913. Her mother sent a birth announcement to Unity cofounder Myrtle Fillmore--unaware, of course, of the key role little Martha would later play in the Unity Movement. She began attending Unity Sunday school at age 2, was a student of Charles Fillmore's, and joined the staff of Unity School of Christianity as a teenager to help support her family during the Great Depression. Smocked served two stints as editor of Daily Word starting in 1944. The magazine of daily blessings was an important part of her life even before becoming editor. She said, "I begin each day at home and at Unity with the Daily Word. Our children and grandchildren were reared on it. By the end of the month, the copy on the kitchen table is covered with jam and toast crumbs!" Smock, given an honorary ordination as a Unity minister in 1980, was a beloved member of the Unity staff and a popular speaker at retreats and conferences. She also authored the best-selling Unity books Meet It With Faith, Halfway Up the Mountain, and Listen, Beloved." Smock made her transition on July 5, 1984.
