Many a Bassist may find himself in one of two incomplete categories. He/She may be fine reader, but be unable to create Bass lines, or a 'groove'. In the other category, he/she may have a good ear and a fine feel for music tub may not really understand his playing. This lack of understanding prevents the musician from progressing at a rapid rate, and limits the type of situations where he/she can be effective.
The intent of this book is to present music theory and music literacy in such a way, that the student will be able to apply their studies directly to playing situations, while at the same time developing a firm foundation and understanding of music. This is not intended as a short-cut method. It is an attempt to stimulate and maintain the student's interest, by supplying them with relevant materials.
The technical studies are included to develop in the Bassist a very important techniques. That basic technique is to become so familiar with the fingerboard, that he/she can play with confidence, without looking at the fingerboard. This will free the Bassist from the distraction of having to see what his fingers re doing. These exercises will also lead to correct left-hand finger placement, which will develop the technique of using the fingers as instruments of measure, which will act as a musical guide.
