The Other Half of History explores an aspect of history that is often overlooked - the history of women.
This fascinating book looks at everyday life for woman in the nineteenth century, how they were expected to behave and what their futures might hold. In 1800 they couldn’t be doctors, lawyers, or scientists. They couldn’t even go to college. Why was this? Were women happy to let men run the country and rule their lives? Using pictures from around Europe, along with quotes from contemporary sources, the book contrasts society’s ideal view of women with the reality of their lives. It also shows how some brave and strong-minded women challenged accepted ideas in a way that helped change society forever.

Grade 4-8-The author has undertaken an ambitious task in covering the lives of women in the 19th century in a mere 48 pages. The brief chapters are broken down into numerous subtopics, often only one paragraph long. The pages are a panorama of illustrations from black-and-white woodcuts to line drawings and full-color reproductions, each accompanied by a succinct caption. Quotations are sprinkled liberally throughout the text in yellow "sticky-note" format. Sidebars offer short biographies and highlights of the era. America includes a helpful introductory overview, a double-page time line broken into categories, and a well-organized chronology. In both volumes, the last chapter features women who were able to achieve some degree of fame in a man's world. Both books are a delight to browse, and should lead readers to more extensive exploration of these topics.
