Women have played critical roles in business, politics, and the family throughout history. However, it is only recently that these roles have been studied and valued by society as a whole. This book explores women's contributions to peace and war, broadening readers' perspectives and enhancing their appreciation of this essential "other half" of history.

Grade 4-6-Two serviceable books that look at the status of women in society and how it changed throughout the 20th century. Peace & War relates how, worldwide, women became an integral part of society when men went to fight in each of the world wars. Macdonald parallels their progress in the United States, England, and elsewhere as she compares their various struggles for equality. This title ends with women getting pushed out of the workforce, as they were displaced by returning World War II veterans. A Changing World follows the postwar baby boom, the cold war, changing fashions, and the major changes of the '60s when women started questioning their place in society. Issues of abortion and contraception, women in politics, and their role in the workforce are briefly discussed. A short summary of where women were in 1900 and where they were in 2000 is appended. The abundant photographs and illustrations closely support the texts. The Young Oxford History of Women in the United States (Oxford, 1995) deals with this subject in more depth.
