Book Description Coronado Press, Lawrence, Kansas, 1970. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 280 Pages. Minnor wear to cover edges and spine. Tight square book with flawless interior text pages. In 1969, Lionel Williams, a black teaching assistant in the University of New Mexico's English Department, distributed to his two freshmen English classes copies of six poems by the San Francisco poetess, Lenore Kandel. Williams told his students that the poems would be discussed at a later date. One of the poems, Love Lust, dealt with the theme of oral sex. Reflecting certain tendencies in modern poetry, Miss Kandel had rejected the use of elaborate metaphor and imagery in Love Lust. The poem used several four-letter words to describe the male and female sex organs and the sexual practice that it treated. Williams' casual distribution of six poems in the classroom produced a series of shock waves in New Mexico. The first public awareness of the use of the Love Lust poem was March 22, 1969. On that day, the New Mexico House of Representatives, by a vote of 47 to 12, adopted a memorial directing the Regents fire Mr. Williams immediately. This book in great detail is an account of the reactions, and there were many, not only in New Mexico, but in university communities throughout the United States. Contents in 19 Chapters: The Storm Breaks, Mr. President Which Side Are You On, The Teaching Assistants, The Ad Hoc Meeting, The Advisory Committee, Obscenity and the Law, Students and Unitarians, The Hearing Starts, Enlightened Pedagogy, The Committee Meets Lionel Williams, The Faculty Meets, The Committee Meets Williams' Students, Williams Cross-Examined Pollack's Day in Court, President Heady Takes the Stand, An Academic Vice-President and a State Senator, The Student Critics, Winding Up the Investigation, The Committee Reports, The President Responds, The Aftermath, and An Appraisal. Plus Appendices: Poems by Lenore Kandel and Special Advisory Committee to President Heady. Size: 5 1/4" X 8 1/2". Bookseller Inventory # 16076
