Kindergarten-Grade 3 This is not so much a book about the body as it is a primer of Judaism. Ganz has used material about human anatomy as a vehicle for explanations of Jewish rites and practices. The information about the body is basic and is expressed in simple language. Explanatory illustrations are sometimes included; some are labeled, although in a rather sketchy manner. There is a section entitled ``From Head to Toe in Hebrew'' with pictures of the face, skeleton, and major internal organs named in English and Hebrew. Typical of the presentation is the section on the neshama , or soul, which is beautifully explained in terms that even small children can understand. Each part or system is related to the daily rituals of Judaism, and the text is liberally sprinkled with Hebrew words. (An excellent glossary is included.) The digestive system, for example, is described along with the practice of making a bracha (blessing) for each of the stages of eating and assimilating foodthanking God for the food itself, for the way the body works, and for the fact that it is working well. Pages are decorated in watercolor marker with attractive, round-eyed children engaged in activities appropriate to the text. All of the boys wear skullcaps, and some wear tzitzis , a ritual garment. Your Wonderful Body! (National Geographic, 1982) is an attractive, thorough treatment of human anatomy and physiology without the religious bias.
