[From rear cover] Louis Akin was a cornucopia of talent, a reservoir energy, and a man lover the West. His oil paintings of the Grand Canyon, desert mesas, Indians, and the snow-capped peaks of massive mountain ranges are all monuments to his genius and understanding of his surroundings. Akin's ability to interpret the untrammeled beauty and wonder of the land and its people is unique and well worth recording. This volume (a reissue of the 1973 edition) is the first comprehensive record of the painter's life and work; it traces his journey from childhood on the Oregon coast to the mecca of all things material, New York City. After failing there as a commercial artist, he accepted an offer from the Santa Fe Railroad to come wast and paint the Hopi Indians. Subsequently, he lived among the Hopis, developed a deep fascination with the Grand Canyon, and spent the rest of his creative days traveling the deserts, mountains, and canyons of the Southwest, on foot, horseback, or by car. His work received favorable reviews in New York galleries and newspapers, and the Santa Fe continued as a patron. Louis Akin's legacy in in the canvases he left, and they, more than works, were as his biography.
