This book looks at the use of improvised antiaircraft weapons against enemy planes. Since the very first use of balloons to assist armies in the field air defense weapons have been improvised to bring down the enemy. This has been a common practice during the 20th century, when the use of aircraft came into its own and their role in counterinsurgency necessitated the need for an answer to airpower. This book covers both the weapons and tactics used by insurgents. Guerrilla Air Defense includes illustrations.

This book was written based upon material I came across while researching On Air Defense. While OAD was part of a series on the profession of arms it could hardly be said that that guerrilla tactics and improvised weapons could cosidered part of that series. I decided to put the historical material I had into a seperate book, applying much of what I had learned in the way of doctrine from the U.S. Army. This book also gave me the opportunity to do illustrations and broaden my horizons as an artist.
I was interested to discover that Osama bin Laden had a copy of GAD in his compound when he was killed, but not suprised. Liberal use of airpower has proven time and time again to be useful in counterinsurgency operations if ruthlessly applied.
James D. Crabtree wrote Guerrilla Air Defense based upon extensive research which resulted from work on another project. While a small volume it is a unique book, the only one on this topic.
