'`A NEW EPOCH will not be satisfied to orient itself on imperishable models of other times, but will have to re-establish those great principles as a new experience coming out of its own thinking and situation. Harmonics is not so presumptuous as to consider itself to be the way to this orientation, but one of many ways, all of which strive for the same goal, giving a direction in the midst of the most burning problems of today."
So wrote Hans Kayser, giving the kernel of his theory of world harmonics. He re-discovered the theory in the philosophy of Pythagoras, becoming convinced that the balance of Western thought was destroyed when "touch" and "sight" were stressed to the detriment of "hearing."
Although harmonics uses musical references, especially to the monochord, the instrument Pythagoras used in his experiments, this theory does not deal with music per se, but with the indications in music that point to harmonious thinking and living.
