Morgan Wolfe Merrick was a young San Antonio recruit who became a member of the first party of Texans to take up the 453-mile march along the San Antonio-El Paso road to occupy Fort Davis in the Trans-Pecos. His journal covering the period of his "actual service" from February 1861 to May 1865 is among the most unusual eyewitness accounts of the war in the West. The complete Merrick journal, with reproductions of some of the author's hand-written pages, is meticulously annotated and introduced by Jerry Thompson. In addition, all of Merrick's sketches, some with touches of color, with their identifying lines and dates are included. From Desert To Bayou: The Civil War Journal And Sketches Of Morgan Wolfe Merrick is a priceless contribution to any Civil War studies reference shelf. -- Midwest Book Review
