In 1872, Gold Hill businessman Duane L. Bliss moved his family to Carson City and built a summer home at the small village of Glenbrook. The little valley with its mountain meadow and stream, framed by virgin forest and the blue water of its bay, had a beauty unmatched by any other vale in the Lake Tahoe Basin. This was where Duane Bliss built his Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company, engineered the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company, and developed a quaint hostelry into the renowned Glenbrook Inn. Innkeeping at Glenbrook has a long and distinguished history beginning in the 1860s when its doors were first opened to travelers and tourists. An early brochure of the period described the features and attractions of the inn as "one of the pleasantest of the unconventional resorts on the lake; every inducement is here offered for those desiring rest and recreation." The hotel register, preserved by the Bliss family, contains the names of the principals who were responsible for Lake Tahoe's importance as a player in the lumber, mining, and tourism businesses. The long succession of national figures who loved and frequented Glenbrook would be hard to match: Nevada's first two U. S. senators (William M. Stewart and James W. Nye), Nevada's first governor (Henry G. Blasdel), Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War generals Phillip H. Sheridan and Irvin McDowell, authors Bret Harte and Joaquin Miller, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Clark Gable, and Rita Hayworth, to name only a few. Hostelries have long been a valid subject for historical research and writing, but Tahoe Heritage is an account not only of Glenbrook and the Bliss family, but of Lake Tahoe from its earliest days. In theircollaboration, Sessions Wheeler tells his tale with sympathy and sensitivity, and William Bliss provides the private Bliss family journals, letters, photographs, and personal recollections of unrecorded facts that are at the heart of this book.

About the Author:

Sessions ""Buck"" Wheeler (1911-1998) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno. He served as the first Director of the Nevada State Fish and Game Commission from 1947-50. As a writer, teacher and biologist, he received many awards and spent his life recording what he knew about his beloved Nevada.A descendant of the pioneer family that first developed the community of Glenbrook at Lake Tahoe, Bill Bliss was the fourth-generation innkeeper at the Glenbrook Inn until it closed in 1976. He has become known in the last 15 years for his highly sought-after watercolors of Northern Nevada's rapidly vanishing historic buildings.

Review:

"In Tahoe Heritage we have a history of Glenbrook from its earliest days in the 1860s to its closing in 1976. Even more importantly, we have a chronicle of a remarkable family of larger-than-life figures with their roots sunk deep into living western history." -Robert Laxalt

Book Description University of Nevada Press, Reno, 1997. Softcover. Condition: New. 172 pages. Softcover. New book. NEVADA. Tahoe Heritage is a lively chronicle of four generations of the pioneering Bliss family, beginning with Duane L. Bliss, a visionary who built an impressive lumbering business and later the renowned Glenbrook Inn. The inn was completed in 1907 and quickly became a destination for the elite of San Francisco. The hotel register contains the names of national figures who loved and frequented Glenbrook: Ulysses Grant, Joaquin Miller, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Clark Gable, and Rita Hayworth, to name a few. The Bliss family closed the inn in 1976. Anyone who has visited the Tahoe area, now a very different place from the idyllic days of Bliss family management, will enjoy this account of its growth and the remarkable family which brought it about. Sessions "Buck" Wheeler (1911-1998) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno. He served as the first Director of the Nevada State Fish and Game Commission from 1947-50. ÑRobert Laxalt "Anyone interested in the history of Lake Tahoe will wish to read this book especially for the story of the transition of the lake from a lumber enterprise to a haven from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. . . . Tahoe Heritage is a nicely done work and a capstone to the varied and productive career of 'Buck' Wheeler." ÑWilliam Rowley, Department of History, University of Nevada, Reno (Key Words: Sessions S. Wheeler, William W. Bliss, Duane L. Bliss, Glenbrook Inn, Lake Tahoe). book. Seller Inventory # 84172X1
