While this volume doesn't cross art forms as do most other volumes of the "Bread Loaf Contemporary Writers" series, the 32 years' work collected here is enough to prove Bell a deep and conscientious thinker. Three journals ("Pages") show the writer unmasked, without artifice, and ten poems included within an autobiographical essay reveal a similar integrity. Placing the essays on technique at the book's end was a stroke of genius. Once readers are aware of Bell's guiding principles, they will be much more willing to pay attention to essays that begin with such frivolous titles as "Bloody Brain Work" or "Three Propositions: Hooey, Dewey, and Looney." The volume reprints poems for seven out-of-print collections, as well as previously unpublished material. For general readers and scholars.
