The success of the Protestant Reformation depended vitally upon the industry, piety, and learning of the first generation of Reformers. Among them, none worked or prayed or studied harder than Iohannes Oecolampadius, the great Reformer of Basel, Switzerland. This volume presents his lectures on Genesis 1-3, translated for the first time into English. These lectures take us back to the heady early days of the Reformation, where we find Oecolampadius skillfully negotiating the dense thicket of perplexing questions that had long surrounded the story of Creation and Fall, boldly reforming the ancient traditions of Christian exegesis by the application of the Reformed conviction that sinners are justified before God by faith alone. He also did what only a learned humanist scholar like him could do, bringing to his aid the insights he had gained through his study of the Hebrew text of Scripture as interpreted in rabbinic Judaism and through his wide reading in the sermons and commentaries of the eastern Church Fathers.

In these lectures, delivered only months before his untimely death, Oecolampadius poured out his very life for the sake of the Reformation in Basel and the formation of the citys first generation of Reformed pastors.

About the Author:

Mickey L. Mattox is Professor of Theology at Marquette University, where he leads the graduate program known as Luther Studies in a Catholic Context. He earned the PhD Degree at Duke University, and has written broadly in Luther studies, the history of exegesis, and ecumenical theology.

Review:

"Not many early modern commentaries have been translated--the notable exceptions being by 'giants' such as Luther and Calvin. What Mattox provides for us here is a glimpse of what lies beyond their shadow. Commentaries help round out our understanding of the place of the Bible in the sixteenth century; for while Oecolapadius is indebted to both Luther and Zwingli, this commentary does not mirror either one exactly. Instead, what comes across is Oecolampadius's own voice; a voice worth hearing. Professor Mattox is to be thanked for providing this translation." -David M. Whitford, Baylor University, Renaissance et Réforme 37.2

"This book definitely should not remain limited tothose interested in Reformation history or old texts. Pastors, theologians, students, and laypeople who desire to reflect on these passages in Genesis willbenefit greatly from reading Oecolampadius's exposition. Just as Oecolampadius offered his biblical lectures for a broad audience, now thankfully, MickeyMattox has enabled a broader audience to have a taste of what Oecolampadiusgave to those willing to hear from Scripture in sixteenth-century Basel." -Jeffrey A. Fisher, Journal of Reformed Theology (2015)

"Students of sixteenth-century biblical scholarship must be greatly indebted to MickeyMattox for this volume. In keeping with the character of the series inaugurated by the lateKen Hagen, the original Latin text is reprinted, with Mattox's English translation on facingpages. A benefit both to scholars desirous of examining the original, and as a reader for graduate students acquiring ecclesiastical Latin. In an era where rare are the students who comeequipped with Latin, such volumes as this are precious, and we must hope for more. . . . [T]he fine introduction Mattox has written . . . will commend this little volume for a graduate seminar text." -R. Gerald Hobbs, Reformation and Renaissance Review (2016)

"Mattox cautions that the English translation is a little stilted, but the warning is not necessary. It is a pleasure to read. The translator is to be thanked for making these valuable lectures readily accessible." -Jared C. Hood, The Reformed Theological Review (2014)
