From Publishers Weekly:

The hijacking of a Northwest Orient Airlines flight in 1971 by one Dan (D. B.) Cooper, who parachuted from the plane and escaped with $200,000, is the only unsolved crime of its kind in U.S. history. The following year a United Airlines flight was hijacked by a man who parachuted from the aircraft with $500,000. Identified as Richard McCoy, a Mormon Sunday School teacher and criminal justice student at Brigham Young University, the hijacker was convicted and sentenced to 45 years, but he escaped and was killed in a shoot-out with law enforcement officials in 1974. Both Rhodes and Calame were federal agents in Utah who worked on the McCoy case and believe that Cooper and McCoy were one and the same, a contention buttressed by the criminals' identical MOs and physical evidence. The argument is convincing, the book dramatic. Photos not seen by PW.

Book Description Univ. of Utah Press (Salt Lake City), 1991. Hardcover / Hardback. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First edition. Hardback. On November 24, 1971, a man calling himself D.B.(Dan) Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines flight 305 between Portland and Seattle, secured a ransom of $200,000, and in the dark of the night parachuted from the plane's aft staircase somewhere over Oregon. The first person to hijack a plane for ransom and parachute from it, Cooper, - or his body - was never located. Many years later, $5,800 in damaged bills was accidentally dug up along the Columbia River. The remaining money has never been found in circulation. This daring and ingenious crime introduced a new dimension to hijacking and captured the imagination and admiration of the American public. The Cooper case remains on the FBI books as the only unsolved airplane hijacking in American history. But Cooper left behind two tell-tale pieces of physical evidence, which the FBI, for the next 17yrs, would keep secret from the press, the public, and a long list of D.B. Cooper imposters. Five months later on April 7, 1972, a man using the alias James Johnson hijacked United Airlines flight 855, extorted $500,000 and also parachuted from the aft staircase. This crime was solved by the FBI in Salt Lake City. Richard McCoy, a Mormon Sunday School teacher, decorated warrant officer with the Green Berets in Vietnam, and law enforcement student at Brigham Young University, was convicted and sentenced to a prison term of 45yrs. Two Federal agents who worked directly on the McCoy case, Bernie Rhodes and Russell Calame have brought to light new information regarding the Cooper and McCoy connection. Illus., Epilogue and Index. 246pp. 8vo. h/back. New -still in original film wrap. Bookseller Inventory # 17053
