Johnny Appleseed's real name was John Chapman, a native of Massachusetts who lived from 1774 to 1845. It is known that he wandered for 40 years through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana sowing apple seeds, staying one step ahead of the pioneer movement in order to sell seedlings to those who traveled through.

Johnny Appleseed, as relived by Marc Joel Levitt, is portrayed as a gentle hero who worked with nature, solved problems through understanding, and valued his relationships with others. Levitt's narration is absolutely first rate with distinctive characterizations, warmth and a smooth style and delivery. His experience as a storyteller is apparent. The incidental music is appropriate but not stellar. The story of Johnny Appleseed is perfect for audio presentation, especially when delivered with such care and compassion.
