The stories in this collection are vessels of century-old Native American lore, some of them perhaps brought to this continent by the original Native American settlers over 12,000 years ago. These stories include tales about ancient times, young heroes, tricksters, magical beasts and much more.

Grade 3 Up-Two Native American storytellers have collected 32 tales for this lively, varied work. Tribes from all over the country are represented. The stories are grouped thematically: ancient times, young heroes, magical beasts, humor, pourquoi and trickster tales, and those that deal with the spirit world. Some of them are widely available elsewhere, such as "Race with Buffalo" (Paul Goble's The Great Race [Bradbury, 1985]), "Coyote and the Rock" (in Judy Sierra and Robert Kaminski's Twice Upon a Time [H.W. Wilson, 1989]), and "Possum's Beautiful Tail" (in James E. Connolly's Why the Possum's Tail Is Bare [Stemmer, 1992]). The selections reflect choices well suited in tone and plot for the intended audience. The book concludes with detailed research notes. Fine scholarship, vibrant legends, and an authentic presentation make it worth having.
