Grade 4-6-- A brief history and description of the nation's capital with emphasis on the federal government and its buildings. There is a section on sights, with descriptions of the museums, attractions, and monuments. The final chapter mentions some of the neighborhoods, such as Georgetown, AdamsMorgan, and Capitol Hill. Reef touches on the city government, but not much is specifically covered except to say that there are drug and crime problems. In general, this is a cursory overview with some misleading broad sentences. Reef states that on Capitol Hill "streets lined with luxurious homes and marble government buildings lie next to blocks of run-down houses." Yet the marble goes only to 3rd Street and the fancy restored houses lie side by side with the unrestored, as they do in other parts of the city. The book is illustrated with current color photographs, including one of President Bush and his dog, Millie. Most are of good quality; the interior views of the Capitol, however, have a pink tinge. There is a list of places to see with addresses and phone numbers, a list of presidents, "fast facts" about the district, a simple map, a good index, and a timeline. All and all, this is a glimpse, but hardly a total picture, of our capital city. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
