The aim of this study of a vitally important subject is to direct the attention of the reader to two very significant facts. The first is, that the only adequate and satisfactory explanation of the until recently all but universally accepted belief that Isaiah wrote the entire book which bears his name is to be found in the fact that such a belief is fully in accord with the teachings of the entire Bible as to the nature of prophecy and also with its teachings as to Isaiah and his writings. Were such not the case, it would be difficult if not impossible to account for this remarkable unanimity in accepting the unity of Isaiah, which continued for so many centuries. The second matter which also deserves very careful consideration is the fact that the rejection of the unity of Isaiah, which has become an essential dogma of the higher criticism, is primarily and mainly due to the acceptance by the critics of a theory as to the nature of prophecy which makes belief in the unity of Isaiah impossible. This modern theory proceeds on the assumption that prediction of the distant future is impossible, that the predictive element in prophecy is to be reduced to the minimum, and that the prophet is to be thought of as a man of his own day and age, who spoke to the people of his own day of matters of urgent and immediate concern to them.
