Of the three documents that comprise the Westminster Standards, the Larger Catechism has been the most neglected, even by conservative Presbyterians who profess to embrace these Standards. J. G. Vos wrote a series of studies of the Larger Catechism that first appeared in Blue Banner Faith and Life (1946–49) and has never circulated widely. G. I. Williamson has edited Vos’s commentary, and P&R is publishing it in book form for the first time. Because the Larger Catechism supplements the Shorter Catechism on such topics as the church and the means of grace, Presbyterians dare not ignore it. This edition of J. G. Vos’s commentary will encourage a recommitment to the Larger Catechism.

J. G. Vos (1903-1983) chaired Geneva College's Bible department for twenty years, edited Blue Banner Faith and Life for nearly thirty, and wrote numerous books and articles. He also edited several works originally written by his father, Geerhardus Vos.
An accurate and clear exposition. Dr. Vos is noted for the clarity and theological soundness of his writing, and I find those qualities exemplified in this commentary.
Vos's commentary can serve a very useful function for the church. He relates the catechism to issues that were contemporary to him and that are still contemporary for us.
The Larger Catechism should be studied and used more than it is J. G. Vos was a fine scholar, and his commentary will be most useful to the church.
