This book answers most questions that parents ask about the physical and sexual growth of their children. The author - a practicing pediatrician and specialist in pediatric endocrinology - describes the processes of physical growth from before birth through adolescence in language easily understood by parents, teachers, day care workers, and others concerned with the development of children. At the same time, the scope and depth of the text and illustrations make the book useful to medical and nursing practitioners who are often asked the kinds of questions raised in Too Tall? Too Short? Too Fat? Too Thin?
One of the principal values of this book is the reassurance it will give many parents whose children, although not average, fall within the broad range of normal' development. Typical case histories are presented to illustrate each of the many different growth patterns discussed. Those patterns that suggest an abnormal condition are pointed out, and current treatment methods are discussed in a straightforward and empathetic manner.
After an opening discussion of normal growth, the author examines problems of short and tall stature, obesity and malnutrition. Next, a section on normal pubertal development is followed by considerations of children whose development is early or delayed. Among other topics discussed are: short stature and the use of growth hormone; obesity in childhood; eating disorders (bulimia and anorexia nervosa); and delayed pubertal development.
The result is a readable and scientifically accurate explanation of the physical growth of children. Most parents and other persons concerned about the growth of a particular child can find reassurance in the information presented in this book. They can also learn when it is appropriate to seek professional evaluation.About the Author:
