Teddy bears are soon to enter their second century. Since I authored my first Price Guide seven years ago, collecting teddy bears (and other soft animals) continues to climb both as a casual hobby and a serious form of investment. The surge of teddy bear collecting which overtook the United States during the 1980s wasted no time infiltrating Europe and making its way to Japan and the Pacific Rim. Today, with thousands of collectors on the hunt for these lovable creatures, the necessity of knowledge in this filed is more significant than ever. This book stems from my undying love of teddy bears and my life-long desire to place this magical fellow in his rightful role as an international ambassador of good will. It is that goal which fuels my thirst for teddy bear information and the passion to share some of that wisdom with you. My goal is to help you become your own best expert by teaching you a few methods for establishing the pedigree of you acquisitions.
In selecting bears and animals to be represented on these pages, the focus is on those with the most predominant and obvious identifying characteristics. This should give you a starting point to determine your bear's origin. The challenges of playing bear sleuth and trying to uncover the mystery of the beginnings of some of my favorite bears only deepens my appreciation for them and their animal pals. The more I learn, the more I love them. Hopefully, this will be the outcome for you as well. For details on the beginning of teddy bears and some of the early manufacturers, please refer to my books Teddy Bears Past and Present, Volumes I & II (Hobby House Press).
