Reviews

This is a compilation of brief hints, suggestions, and how-tos from over 200 contributors, arranged by subjects such as composting, seed starting, pest control, and tool care and selection. The experts are listed at the end of each section and include university researchers, commercial growers, master gardeners, and garden writers. Their advice ranges from the oft-suggested (keep a photographic record) to the innovative (mulch with hay to attract spiders). The sections on pest management are especially useful and emphasize natural and biological controls. The majority of the advice appears to be provided free of personal interest, alhough the owner of a nursery for seedling perennials suggests buying such plants to save costs. Most gardeners will find enjoyment and useful tips while browsing through this book; its value for reference will depend a great deal on the quality of the index, which was not available at the time of review.
