Some 29 antique quilts by Midwestern quiltmakers were the inspiration for this superb collection of quilt patterns. This is primarily a pattern book, although some historical notes are included. In some instances the authors have attempted to duplicate the original quilts; in others they have put a new spin on a familiar design. For each quilt, there are fabric and supply lists; instructions for cutting, assembling, quilting, and finishing; full-sized templates; and quilt layouts. Patterns are graded by difficulty, with most in the "easy" range. All in all, this is a very impressive effort; both traditional quiltmakers who prefer to piece and quilt by hand and quilters who opt for speed by rotary cutting and strip piecing will enjoy it. Highly recommended for public libraries. (Color illustrations not seen.)-- Janice Zlendich, California State Univ. Lib., Fullerton
