Although not a well-known breed, the Wheaten is gaining an enthusiastic following among those desiring a medium-sized nonshedding dog that is good with children. Vesley, a long-time fancier of the breed, offers more comprehensive information than is provided in Margaret O'Conner's Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers (TFH, 1990), which is tailored to pet shop sales. While the bulk of the text is on history, breeding, and showing and will be of primary interest to breeders and exhibitors, the pet buyer will also find frank and helpful advice on selecting, grooming, and training this affable and unusual breed.
