After healing the Fireling prince's sick child, Grena receives a magic pomegranate bush

Kindergarten-Grade 4-Grena is a healer who lives on barren land in Pomegranate Valley, a place "southwest of sunrise." One night, a Fireling prince asks her to heal his daughter. Though she knows that Firelings are magical and possibly evil, she goes with him to the Canyon of Fire, saves the child, and is rewarded with a special pomegranate plant. When she returns home, the valley residents call her a witch for consorting with Firelings and refuse to let her tend the sick. Soon her bush bears a giant pomegranate. Since she had promised the first fruit to the Fireling prince, she refuses to sell it to anyone, even the king. The prince then appears, reveals that the fruit has seeds of ruby, and rewards her with its riches since she kept her promise to him. Though smoothly told, parts of this tale seem contrived. Grena transfers a "death-beast" from the suffering child to herself, yet aside from fainting, she remains unaffected. Also, it is unclear why the people of the valley suddenly accept her after the appearance of the prince, since they ostracized her for associating with him in the first place. Wright's illustrations convey some of the wonder of the Canyon of Fire and the magic of the heroine's giant fruit, but the story itself is not compelling enough to capture the imagination of most readers.
