From the Author:

I originally wrote Paralegal's Litigation Handbook with one primary goal in mind -- to provide paralegals and paralegal students (and law clerks) with a book that was written from the perspective of a practicing paralegal. The Second Edition is intentionally written to offer hands-on techniques and skills. An added approach is that this book will not become outdated quickly.

Written in the logical sequence of the litigation process, the Second Edition begins with an introduction to the courts and procedures, then follows through the initial filing of the lawsuit, and the response by the defendant. Continuing through the litigation process, chapters on motions, negotiations and pretrial, discovery, trial preparation, judgment and post-judgment follow. Finally, the last chapter is on appeals. Scattered throughout the book are additional chapters, covering specific skills needed by the litigation paralegal, including legal writing, legal  writing, legal research, and legal interviewing. To attain additional knowledge, I recommend that you read more specific books on technology.

One of the highlights of this Second Edition are two new chapters on computers and automated litigation support. Today paralegals need a good working  knowledge of computers and how they are used in law.  While not all paralegals will use automated litigation support, most paralegals will use computers in some fashion. Chapters 13 and 14 are packed with valuable  information that the industrious paralegal use to improve his or her computer savvy.

In writing this Second Edition, I have the following goals:

  1.  To provide paralegals and paralegal students with a practical hands-on approach to perform their tasks
  2.  To be as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible;
  3.  To offer step-by-step procedures to perform most functions;
  4.  To serve as a handy guide for reference litigation tasks;
  5.  To be a resource for usable forms and checklists; and
  6.  To give practical examines for reference.

Review:

I worked with Carole at an Atlanta law firm where we became friends, and we have stayed in touch for over 30 years. She is the author of a number of legal books, the first being the Paralegal's Litigation Handbook which has its place in the Library of Congress.

I know Carole to be energetic, hard working and loyal to her many friends and past employers. She is now self-employed and consults via the internet with professionals in the legal and publishing fields.

Carole's book has been my 'bible' throughout my career. I have given many copies away.

I have been a paralegal for 18 years. The Paralegal's Litigation Handbook by Carole Bruno sits on my desk like a dictionary. I promise you, every item you can think of about litigation is in that book, including definitions, form templates, time management, systematic instructions on what to do next, how to find and answers, etc. I could probably write a book describing this book, but it has saved my behind more than I care to count.
