About This Survival Kit PURPOSE OF THE GUIDE This unique guide has been developed to help all teachers survive the pressures of working with exceptional children and derive greater rewards from the experience. Many texts are filled with theories, but very little practical advice has been made available. From my 15 years of teaching special educators, 25 years in psychology and education, 13 years in private practice, and 17 years on Committees on Special Education, I have come to realize the need that all teachers have for a wide variety of information that can be accessed at a moment's notice. This book is organized to give teachers that practical advice. It also presents a global concept of special education that allows teachers to fulfill the requirements for any role that they may encounter.

Filled with practical tools and suggestions, the guide takes special education teachers through the various stages required to understand the processes of referral, parent intakes, evaluation, interpretation, diagnosis, remediation, prescription, placement, recommendations, parent conferences, Committee on Special Education referrals, individual educational plans, classroom management, curriculum, materials, and practical educational law. It also contains many useful tables, charts, and helpful handouts for parents.

It is the responsibility of any special education teacher to keep abreast of the latest techniques, laws, tools, and evaluative measures that exist in the field. Having one book that provides all the necessary survival skills can only facilitate the process of teaching exceptional children.

WHO CAN USE THIS GUIDE

This type of book can be very useful not only for special education teachers but for regular classroom teachers, administrators, college students, and parents of exceptional children. The information contained here offers all these individuals answers to many everyday questions involving their students, children, and teaching learning techniques.

HELPFUL AND UNIQUE FEATURES

This book, which contains the most up-to-date information possible, is a unique guide for special education teachers because of several features:

Its developmental, step-by-step approach takes readers through a variety of topics and procedures necessary for a realistic as well as complete awareness of exceptional children. Written in an easy-to-read format, the book draws on the author's extensive experience to present a wealth of tried-and-true suggestions. The material is presented in a way that allows readers to make an easy transition to classroom applications. The focus is on the more practical and commonly required issues, avoiding any material that may be obscure and meaningless. Many illustrations reinforce the concepts presented throughout the guide, including charts and tables on subjects of special interest to educators. Numerous practical tips give teachers the opportunity to share with parents on a variety of topics. Useful information can be immediately applied to the variety of roles that special educators may fill. The Surviva1 Kit concludes with invaluable parent conference handouts, examples of psychoeducational reports, common abbreviations, and glossaries of special education terminology. Roger Pierangelo
